Virginia redistricting referendum draws national attention, campaign spending

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Virginians will begin voting in less than three weeks on a redistricting measure that could change the outcome of this year’s midterm elections.
The redistricting effort is drawing national dollars after Virginia’s Supreme Court cleared the way for a spring referendum to be held. Both sides are racing to get their message across on why Virginians should vote “yes” or “no” to a proposed congressional map.
The April 21 referendum will ask voters whether they support changing congressional lines. Early voting starts March 6.
“This is about leveling the playing field. What we tell voters is this is in reaction to what’s going around the nation, knowing that allowing elections to be rigged against them is not the Virginia way,” Keren Charles Dongo, campaign manager for Virginians for Fair Elections said.
