Duringthe2022nationalelections,inabidtocontrolmisinformation,disinformationandhatespeechonsocialmedia,theElectionCommissionhadannouncedplanstocoordinatewithtechcompanieslikeMeta(whichoperatesFacebookandInstagram),X,andChinesefirmByteDance,theparentcompanyofthevideo-sharingappTikTok.
NarayanPrasadBhatta,spokespersonforthecommission,saidthistimetheyaretakinganewapproachtocurbthespreadofmisleadinginformationaheadoftheMarch5elections.
TheElectionInformation,DisseminationandCoordinationCentre(EIDC)hasbeensetupunderthecommissiontomakeelectionsmoresystematicandtechnology-driven.WithintheEIDC,theInformationIntegrityPromotionCentre(IIPC)workstodiscouragethespreadofmisinformationandmisleadingcontent.Representativesfromvariousgovernmentagenciesareinvolvedinthismechanism.
