Justice Department sues Virginia over voter registration records

RICHMOND,Va.—TheU.S.DepartmentofJusticehasfiledafederallawsuitagainsttheCommonwealthofVirginia,allegingthestatefailedtoprovidecompletevoterregistrationrecordsasrequiredunderfederallaw.
Thelawsuit,announcedTuesdaybytheU.S.DepartmentofJusticeCivilRightsDivision,claimsVirginiadidnotfullycomplywithrequestsforitsstatewidevoterregistrationlists.Federalofficialssaytheinformationisrequiredtoensuretransparencyandcompliancewithelectionlaws.
“ThisDepartmentofJusticehasnowsued24statesforfailingtoprovidevoterrolldataandwillcontinuefilinglawsuitstoprotectAmericanelections,”AttorneyGeneralPamelaBondisaidinastatement.“Accuratevoterrollsarethefoundationofelectionintegrity,andanystatethatfailstomeetthisbasicobligationoftransparencycanexpecttoseeusincourt.”
