Oregon expands online voter registration to include Social Security verification

SALEM,Ore.(KATU)—Oregonhasupdateditsonlinevoterregistrationsystem,allowingeligibleresidentstoregistertovoteusingthelastfourdigitsoftheirSocialSecuritynumberandaverifiedsignature.
Previously,onlinevoterregistrationinOregonwaslimitedtopeoplewithanOregondriver’slicense,permit,orstateidentificationcard,becausethesystemreliedonsignaturesonfilewiththeDepartmentofMotorVehicles(DMV).
Underthenewrules,eligiblevoterswithoutthosecredentialscanregisteronlinebyprovidingthelastfourdigitsoftheirSocialSecuritynumberandsubmittinganelectronicimageoftheirsignaturethroughtheSecretaryofState’swebsite.
Thechange,whichtakeseffectonWednesday,Dec.31,isrequiredunderHouseBill4133,passedbytheLegislaturein2022andsignedintolawwithadeadlineofJan.1,2026.
